House Rules

Her husband’s son is back from college and he has not come alone. The stepmother’s response is to write a set of house rules, and the rules are not about the dishes. She has decided what she wants, and the girlfriend sleeping down the hall is a complication rather than an obstacle.

House Rules is about who sets the terms in a house, and it keeps all three of them under the same roof for the whole run. The written rules are a good device: they turn every ordinary domestic moment into something that was decided in advance by the person with the most to gain.
